What is EmergeMemphis?

EmergeMemphis helps high potential business grow and prosper in Memphis. All companies and individuals demonstrating an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit are invited to explore synergies with EmergeMemphis, with a special focus on technology, minority, and women-owned businesses. Companies participating in the EmergeMemphis program help diversify the Memphis economic base, add to the number of high-wage jobs, create educational opportunities for local citizens, and provide attractive options for local talent that might otherwise be recruited out of Memphis.



What are the criteria for entering the EmergeMemphis program?

Prospective clients must have a written business plan or concept, sufficient initial financing to cover the costs associated with joining the EmergeMemphis program, the desire and need for assistance in business development and the commitment to build a business that will positively impact this community. What kind of companies are your current clients?

Current clients include companies in software development, communications, wireless applications, networking, web-based travel services, interactive communications technology, medical software and data management, market research, computer and systems cabling and design, medical diagnostic distribution, destination management services, strategic consulting, e-business development, and a unique real estate sales systems and technology. Although EmergeMemphis has a specific focus on technology, minority, and women-owned businesses, ALL ENTREPRENEURS are eligible for participation.



How many firms are in the EmergeMemphis program?

EmergeMemphis currently houses more than 26 businesses and is set for growth in the permanent home at 516 Tennessee Street.



How long can a company stay in the EmergeMemphis program?

The standard tenure in the EmergeMemphis program is three to four years. EmergeMemphis is not a landlord, but rather a partner to help a business overcome obstacles and build a strong financial foundation.



What happens to former firms after they leave the EmergeMemphis program?

EmergeMemphis client firms are strongly encouraged to remain in Memphis—hopefully in the Downtown area.



Are there other programs like EmergeMemphis?

According to the National Business Incubation Association (www.NBIA.org), there are nearly 1,000 business incubators in the U.S. , varying greatly in population served and organization. During the explosive growth of technology businesses in the mid to late 1990s, for-profit business incubators grew in popularity, with venture capital investors accelerating start-up companies. Since the burst of the technology bubble and ultimate demise of many technology start-ups, the for-profit model has lost popularity. EmergeMemphis is a non-profit organization (501(c)3) that creates jobs by supporting entrepreneurial activity. EmergeMemphis enjoys strong support from local government, private businesses, and other non-profit organizations, and is the recognized leader in entrepreneurial activity in the Mid-South.
